CNN’s Buying Green Guide

CNN’s website has a new section called Buying Green, the lead-in to which is:
The rise of organic foods, recycled products and eco-friendly ingredients have helped a generation of consumers “go green.”
The site presents a number of features on “Products” and “Consumers” and even allows visitors to take a green quiz and submit questions. Some of the interesting facts from one of the interactive features include:
- Growth of Hybrid Car Sales: 9,350 (2000) to 205,749 (2005)
- Hybrid Car Projections: 400,000 (2006) to 1,300,000 (2011)
- Green Technologies in Construction: $5.8 billion (2003) to $10 billion (2005)
- Organic Food: $3.59 billion, or 0.81% (1997) to $13.83 billion, or 2.48% (2005)
I’m glad more mainstream sites are starting to publish green features. The New York Times published a feature a few months ago and just yesterday I posted on Grist’s new section on climate change. Let’s hope everyone keeps it up.
Sustainability should become a feature of every major (and minor) publication in the years to come. There’s no excuse for not accepting responsibility for our wasteful ways. It’s time to turn the ship around.
