While I too think this program has it’s flaws, some economical some environmental, I would love to hear your definition of “wealthier” Americans. I’m so sick of the middle class who may own a house, own two cars, has two jobs (most likely those jobs are in jeopardy), and is putting two kids through college being classified as wealthy. Why don’t we help those the most (the American taxpayer) that are now responsible for providing for those with the least. Wealthy Americans aren’t utilizing “cash for clunkers”. They don’t drive clunkers. But hard working americans that own a Honda Civic that commute 45 miles to work one way with $300,000 miles on their car are utilizing it.

My father and brother are car dealers (American-made) and beyond the vehicles going in the trash heap (what a waste!), the cash for clunkers program is also failing yet another of its objectives: to help the American car industry. Since Chrysler and GM stopped production a few months ago to go through bankruptcy proceedings, the dealers (smaller ones especially) are running out of new cars, and they’re a commodity now that the gov’t rebates have begun, so my dad can’t even find a dealer to buy a new car from. He’s out. He will no longer benefit from the program. Who will? Foreign imports who have plenty of stock. Bummer for the big 3, again.
