Public Routes

Just a short post today on a very useful web tool called PublicRoutes. While the site’s been around for a while, St. Louis was just added to its list of covered cities, which now stands at 21. According to the website:
“PublicRoutes is an international, directions based web resource offering users premier travel services including organizing an entire trip to navigating around major cities in the most efficient manner possible. City dwellers, tourists and local businesses alike are able to use a single source for planning, locating and traveling to top restaurants, shops, services and popular landmarks. With PublicRoutes, you can create detailed maps, avoid traffic delays and utilize easy-to-follow directions that help you get where you need to go - faster.”
Brilliant. I know that living in an urban area of a city with good but not stellar public transit can make it hard to commit to using the transportation infrastructure. PublicRoutes is a great resources for being able to find the fastest and most logical way to travel from one point to another, either on foot and/or using public transit. That being said, St. Louis is fortunate to have a rather robust public transit website at Metro, which the local newspaper deems is better than what PublicRoutes offers. The point of bringing the site to attention is that not all cities have a website that matches the quality of their transit systems, and vice versa.

Nice find. As I live in Chicago, I have become comfortable with RTA’s trip planner (http://tripsweb.rtachicago.com/). However, it’s not always accurate, so maybe it’s time to give this a try!

This is fabulous! I lived in Seattle for 2 years, but now I live in KCMO and I’ve had problems with both public transportation websites of each city. It’s nice to know there is an alternative somewhere!

I couldn’t get this page to load. I live just outside NYC and was trying to find out if NY was covered. I couldn’t even get that far.

I just check it and the site does cover NYC. If it still doesn’t work try:
http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/
It’s a link to the transit authority of New York.

I know that they cover NYC and the a good portion of NY and NJ-since you live just outside of the city. They updated the site and were probably down a couple times while they changed it and fixing some of the errors that come with changing the format. I just used it today so it should be back up and running.
